NOTES:

I never met my grandfather as he died before I was born. This is what my mother relayed to me: He was a nice man and took very good care of his family. He bought my father a new car, I think it was a Thunderbird. My father wrecked it! He wanted to buy a fishing boat and retire but died before that he could see his plans through. It was winter and he was warming up the car in the garage. His daughter, Sandra, found him on the floor. Carbon monoxide poisoning contributed to his death.

2 February 2014 update: In 1930, Willie Bob had a job as a farm laborer. I assume that he is living with his sister Lucille because his mother, Mary Ella/Mayella/Mae Ella had passed away in 1925 and his father, Willie P, was living in St. Louis, Missouri with his second wife, Ethel (1930 St. Louis, Missouri census). Willie Bob is listed as a widow on the 1930 Chickasaw County, Mississippi census, implying that he had been married. Who was his first wife and when/how/where did she die? Did they have any children (alive or dead)? Perhaps her death record can be found in the 1912-1943 Mississippi Death Index. Whilst searching for Willie Bob on the 1940 census, I searched 10 pages backwards and forwards from known family members: his father Willie P GREGORY with his second wife in St. Louis, Missouri; his sister Lucille TAYLOR nee GREGORY with her second husband in Brevard County, Florida; grandmama Mary Louise with her parents in Port Arthur, Texas and even some of his GREGORY cousins in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He was nowhere near them. Maybe he just wasn't counted that census year but I won't give up. I decided to try the city directories but the earliest he was listed was in the 1955 St. Louis, Missouri city directory. Was this a disappointment? Far from it. In the course of perusing the city directories, I discovered that granddaddy and his father, Willie P, lived in the very same building on 4293 St. Louis Ave that we lived in during the 80's. I instantly went to Google maps and searched for the address. When I zoomed into the house, memories came flooding back as I saw the familiar red brick and then the empty field to the right with trees and then the school across the street that my brother had attended. The earliest house that I can remember living in was this one and what great memories I have. And now I know it also housed great-grandfather Willie P (4293 St. Louis Ave) and grandparents Willie Bob Sr and Mary Louise (4293A St. Louis Ave)! It is a multiple family home with separate entrances. The apartment we lived in was upstairs, the front door being the second one from the left. If the building is still for sale when I get home, I think I just might inquire if the real estate agency would let me look around. The second important discovery that I made from the city directories was the occupation and work place of Willie Bob Sr. Don't you just love city directories?! In 1955 he was working as a meat stamper at the St. Louis Independent Packing Company. I do not know how long he was employed by them but his 1970 death certificate shows that his usual occupation was a meat trimmer at Independent Packing Co. According to the City of St. Louis Missouri's website, "...the Independent Packing Company has been replaced by the Missouri Pacific freight terminal and yards."

Notes: Surname of Legueral COOPERWOOD (husband of Lucille GREGORY) has been changed from MONTGOMERY to COOPERWOOD on the family tree. There may have been an error on the 1930 census where the enumerator incorrectly listed his surname as MONTGOMERY. Hopefully this new update will help me find Legueral, his wife, Lucille GREGORY and her brother, Willie Bob GREGORY Sr on the 1940 census. Update: Lucille was found on a Florida 1940 census with the surname of Taylor after having remarried.
